How Does Physiotherapy Work?

Your physiotherapist will assess how your body moves to help identify the underlying cause of your concern, and from there, develop a treatment plan tailored to your individual goals and lifestyle.

Depending on your needs, treatments may include:

Manual Therapy

Through gentle manipulation of muscles and joints, manual therapy may help reduce pain and work toward improving your mobility.

Exercise Programs

An individualised exercise programme may help support the development of strength and flexibility over time.

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy uses high-energy sound waves that may help stimulate tissue and support the recovery process.

Therapeutic Ultrasound

Sound waves directed at the affected area may help support recovery and reduce inflammation.

Dry Needling

Using fine needles applied to targeted muscle points, dry needling may help address muscle tightness and assist in managing pain.

Clinical Reformer Pilates

Clinical reformer pilates may assist in improving movement patterns and supporting your long-term recovery journey.

Women’s Health Physiotherapy for Every Chapter of Life

Ongoing back discomfort, bladder leakage or reduced core strength after childbirth can affect everyday activities. Pelvic pain and pain during intercourse can also influence your relationships and sense of wellbeing, and support is available for these concerns.

Women’s health can involve many different concerns, and the right support will look different for each person. The pelvic health physios at DX Physio provide tailored women’s health physio care based on what you are experiencing, supporting your strength, comfort and confidence as you move.

How Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Can Support Your Health

Women may come to see our pelvic floor physiotherapists for reasons that seem unrelated to the pelvis. Recurrent back or hip pain is one example, especially when previous attempts such as stretches, massage or general physiotherapy have provided limited results.

The pelvic region can be an important part of the picture, even when your main concern is back or hip pain. Pregnancy, menopause and surgery may contribute to pelvic muscles becoming weak, tight or unbalanced, which can influence posture, stability and breathing. A pelvic floor assessment may help identify whether these muscles are contributing to your symptoms and guide an individualised care plan.

Every woman’s health experience is personal, and no two sets of symptoms are exactly alike. At DX Physio, our pelvic health physios shape women’s health physio care around your concerns, circumstances and goals, helping you work towards more comfortable, capable and confident movement.

Pain doesn’t have to get in the way of living well.

We do accept Medicare CDM/EPC referrals from your GP. With a valid referral, you may be eligible to claim a Medicare rebate for up to five sessions per calendar year. Please be aware that a small gap fee will still apply.

It depends on your condition and goals. After your initial assessment, your physiotherapist will provide a tailored treatment plan and suggest a recommended visit frequency.

Hands-on manual therapy is included as part of your physiotherapy consultation where it is clinically appropriate.

Dry needling techniques involve fine needles inserted into targeted muscle points, which some people find mildly uncomfortable. Your physio will check in with you throughout to help keep you comfortable.

Our physiotherapists have experience in assessing and managing a broad range of sports and exercise-related injuries. Whether you are a competitive athlete or simply looking to stay active, we’ll collaborate with you to develop a personalised care plan to support your recovery.

Beyond managing existing injuries, physiotherapy may also play a valuable role in helping you understand how your body moves, supporting better posture, and improving movement efficiency. This approach may assist in reducing the likelihood of future injuries.

Physiotherapy is not just for when something goes wrong. Regular physiotherapy sessions may help you move more efficiently, manage muscle tightness, and support improved posture, contributing to a healthier and more active life over the long term.

Women’s health physio is a focused area of practice covering pelvic health, pregnancy and postnatal recovery, menopause, and the pain or continence concerns that come with them. Our pelvic health physios see women across Sydney at every stage of life, from first-time mums to women navigating menopause and beyond.

The main distinction is the scope of care. Women’s health physiotherapy can support women with concerns related to pregnancy, postnatal recovery, menopause, pelvic health, pain and continence, while pelvic floor physiotherapy concentrates on the muscles supporting the bladder, bowel and pelvic organs. Because these areas are connected, your women’s health appointment may include pelvic floor assessment if it suits your needs and you have given consent.

At your initial visit, we will discuss your current concerns, relevant birth or surgical history, changes you have noticed and your health goals. This is followed by an assessment of how your body moves and functions, which helps guide an individualised care plan. Treatment only proceeds with your consent, and you can ask questions at any stage.

We’ll take a detailed history including your symptoms, your birth or surgical history, what’s changed and when, and talk through your health goals. From there we’ll assess how your body is moving and functioning, and build a plan around your specific needs. Nothing happens without your consent, and you’re welcome to ask questions at any point.

Both may be available to you. If your GP has prepared a chronic condition management plan and referred you for physiotherapy, Medicare covers up to five allied health sessions per calendar year, shared across all allied health services on that plan — your GP will confirm whether you’re eligible. If you hold extras cover that includes physiotherapy, your health fund will usually cover a portion of each consultation, with the amount depending on your level of cover and any annual limits. It’s worth checking with your fund before your appointment.

Physiotherapy may support a broad range of concerns, including back or neck pain, sports injuries, joint pain, muscle strains, headaches, pelvic pain, pregnancy-related discomfort, postnatal recovery, bladder concerns, bowel changes, incontinence, prolapse and rehabilitation after surgery or injury. Your care is shaped around your symptoms, needs and personal goals.

A physiotherapy assessment can consider pelvic floor function, muscle tightness, coordination and the way you move when addressing urinary incontinence, bladder leakage or pelvic pain. Depending on your circumstances, care may include bladder habit education, pelvic floor exercises, breathing strategies and an individual exercise program.

Where clinically appropriate, an assessment may also include a physical examination and, with your informed consent, an internal assessment. Physiotherapy may support related concerns such as bowel symptoms, pain during intercourse and pelvic organ prolapse, with care tailored to your symptoms, goals and comfort.

A referral is generally not needed to make a physiotherapy appointment. Your care may involve information and advice, personalised exercises, movement guidance or manual therapy, depending on your concerns and goals. Some private health funds may offer rebates for physiotherapy, subject to your cover and annual limits, so please confirm your eligibility with your provider.

Physiotherapy is not just for when something goes wrong. Regular physiotherapy sessions may help you move more efficiently, manage muscle tightness, and support improved posture, contributing to a healthier and more active life over the long term.A physiotherapist guides each class through structured exercises that may support strength, mobility, balance and everyday movement. Sessions can be modified for different abilities, health needs and goals, helping you take part safely and with confidence.
