What is Involved in a Physiotherapy Session?

By assessing how your body moves, your physiotherapist may be able to identify the underlying cause of your concern and develop a treatment plan tailored to your goals and lifestyle.

Treatments may include:

Manual Therapy

Gentle manipulation of the muscles and joints may help to relieve discomfort and support improved mobility.

Exercise Programs

An individualised exercise programme may help support the development of strength and flexibility over time.

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy delivers high-energy sound waves to targeted areas, which may help stimulate tissue and assist in supporting your recovery.

Therapeutic Ultrasound

Targeted sound waves applied to the affected area may assist in supporting recovery and managing inflammation.

Dry Needling

Using fine needles applied to targeted muscle points, dry needling may help address muscle tightness and assist in managing pain.

Clinical Reformer Pilates

Through guided movement on the reformer, clinical reformer pilates may help support improved movement patterns and long-term recovery.

Support for Your Pelvic and Women’s Health at Any Age

Ongoing back discomfort, bladder leakage or reduced core strength after childbirth can affect everyday activities. Pelvic pain and pain during intercourse can also influence your relationships and sense of wellbeing, and support is available for these concerns.

Your women’s health needs are individual, whether they relate to pelvic health, recovery or movement. At DX Physio, our pelvic health physios take the time to understand your experience and personalise your women’s health physio care to support comfortable movement, greater strength and confidence.

Understanding the Role of Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy

A pelvic concern is not always what brings someone to our pelvic floor physiotherapists. Ongoing back or hip pain can lead women to seek another perspective, particularly when stretching, massage and general physio have not stopped the discomfort from recurring.

Looking beyond the painful area may reveal a role for the pelvic floor. Changes in pelvic muscle strength, tension or coordination can occur after pregnancy, menopause or surgery and may influence the way you hold yourself, move and breathe. A pelvic floor assessment may clarify how these muscles relate to your symptoms, supporting tailored treatment and exercise planning.

You don’t have to let pain hold you back.

Whether you compete at a high level or simply enjoy staying active, we’ll develop a personalised care plan designed to support your recovery and help you return to the activities you love.

Physiotherapy isn’t just about addressing current injuries. It may also help you gain a better understanding of your body, support improved posture, and encourage more efficient movement patterns, which may help in reducing the risk of future injuries.

The potential benefits of physiotherapy extend beyond injury management. Regular physiotherapy may assist you in moving more efficiently, managing muscle tightness, and working toward better posture, all of which may support a healthier, more active lifestyle over time.

Women’s health physiotherapy covers the changing needs women may experience with pelvic health, pregnancy, postnatal recovery and menopause, including associated pain or continence issues. Our pelvic health physios see women throughout Sydney at all stages of life, from first-time mums to those navigating menopause and beyond.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is one part of women’s health physiotherapy. It focuses on assessing and supporting the pelvic floor muscles, which help support the bladder, bowel and pelvic organs. Women’s health physiotherapy has a broader focus and may address concerns across different life stages, although pelvic floor assessment can form part of an appointment when appropriate.

Your first appointment will begin with a thorough conversation about your symptoms, birth or surgical history, when things changed and what you would like to achieve. We will then look at your movement and physical function before developing a plan suited to your needs. You remain in control throughout the appointment, with consent required for treatment and plenty of opportunity to ask questions.

If you have a chronic condition management plan from your GP, Medicare may cover up to five allied health sessions each calendar year when you are referred for physiotherapy. The five sessions are a combined allowance across the allied health services under that plan, and your GP will advise whether you meet the eligibility requirements. A private health fund may also contribute if physiotherapy is included in your extras cover. The contribution varies according to your cover and annual limits, so confirm the details with your fund before your appointment.

Physiotherapy can address concerns such as pelvic pain, pregnancy-related discomfort, postnatal recovery, bladder concerns, bowel changes, incontinence and prolapse, as well as back and neck pain, sports injuries, joint pain, muscle strains, headaches and rehabilitation following surgery or injury. Treatment is planned to suit your individual symptoms, needs and goals.

A physiotherapy assessment can consider pelvic floor function, muscle tightness, coordination and the way you move when addressing urinary incontinence, bladder leakage or pelvic pain. Depending on your circumstances, care may include bladder habit education, pelvic floor exercises, breathing strategies and an individual exercise program.

If it is clinically appropriate, your physiotherapist may recommend a physical examination. An internal assessment is only undertaken with your informed consent. Physiotherapy may also support bowel symptoms, pain during intercourse and pelvic organ prolapse, with the approach shaped around your symptoms, goals and comfort.

A referral is generally not needed to make a physiotherapy appointment. Your care may involve information and advice, personalised exercises, movement guidance or manual therapy, depending on your concerns and goals. Some private health funds may offer rebates for physiotherapy, subject to your cover and annual limits, so please confirm your eligibility with your provider.
