Personalised Women’s Health Care Through Every Life Stage

Whether symptoms began after having a baby or have developed over time, concerns such as back pain, bladder leakage and core weakness deserve attention. Pelvic pain and pain during intercourse can be difficult to manage alone, particularly when they affect daily life and intimacy.

Women’s health can involve many different concerns, and the right support will look different for each person. The pelvic health physios at DX Physio provide tailored women’s health physio care based on what you are experiencing, supporting your strength, comfort and confidence as you move.

Why Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy May Be Part of Your Care

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is not only for women with obvious pelvic symptoms. Some women seek support after persistent back or hip pain continues despite trying stretches, massage or general physiotherapy, with symptoms that repeatedly return.

Pelvic floor function can affect more than bladder and bowel concerns. Following pregnancy, during menopause or after surgery, the pelvic muscles may become weaker, tighter or less coordinated, with possible effects on posture, balance and breathing. Assessing this area can give your physiotherapist useful information about your symptoms and help determine appropriate next steps.

Dry needling techniques involve fine needles inserted into targeted muscle points, which some people find mildly uncomfortable. Your physio will check in with you throughout to help keep you comfortable.

At DX Physio, our physiotherapy team has experience working with a wide range of sports and exercise-related injuries. From elite athletes to those simply wanting to remain active, we’ll work alongside you to create a tailored care plan to support your recovery journey.

Physiotherapy isn’t only for managing existing injuries; it may also play a role in helping you understand your body, improve your posture, and move more efficiently. This may help prevent future injuries.

The potential benefits of physiotherapy extend beyond injury management. Regular physiotherapy may assist you in moving more efficiently, managing muscle tightness, and working toward better posture, all of which may support a healthier, more active lifestyle over time.

Women’s health physiotherapy covers the changing needs women may experience with pelvic health, pregnancy, postnatal recovery and menopause, including associated pain or continence issues. Our pelvic health physios see women throughout Sydney at all stages of life, from first-time mums to those navigating menopause and beyond.

Women’s health physio is the broader umbrella, while pelvic floor physiotherapy looks specifically at the muscles that support your bladder, bowel and pelvic organs. Women’s health appointments may involve some element of pelvic floor assessment, because those muscles influence so much of how your body moves.

At your initial visit, we will discuss your current concerns, relevant birth or surgical history, changes you have noticed and your health goals. This is followed by an assessment of how your body moves and functions, which helps guide an individualised care plan. Treatment only proceeds with your consent, and you can ask questions at any stage.

You may be able to claim through Medicare or private health insurance, depending on your circumstances. A GP-prepared chronic condition management plan can provide Medicare coverage for up to five allied health appointments in a calendar year, with those sessions shared across the allied health services included in the plan. Eligibility should be confirmed with your GP. Extras cover that includes physiotherapy may pay part of the consultation fee, although this depends on your policy and remaining annual limit. Checking with your fund beforehand can help clarify your benefits.

Physiotherapy may support a broad range of concerns, including back or neck pain, sports injuries, joint pain, muscle strains, headaches, pelvic pain, pregnancy-related discomfort, postnatal recovery, bladder concerns, bowel changes, incontinence, prolapse and rehabilitation after surgery or injury. Your care is shaped around your symptoms, needs and personal goals.

A physiotherapy assessment can consider pelvic floor function, muscle tightness, coordination and the way you move when addressing urinary incontinence, bladder leakage or pelvic pain. Depending on your circumstances, care may include bladder habit education, pelvic floor exercises, breathing strategies and an individual exercise program.

Depending on your circumstances, assessment may involve a physical examination. An internal assessment may be discussed where clinically appropriate, but it will only occur after you have given informed consent. Care may also address bowel symptoms, pain during intercourse and pelvic organ prolapse, with treatment tailored to what you need and feel comfortable with.

In most situations, you do not need a referral to book physiotherapy. The appointment may include practical advice, tailored exercise, movement approaches and hands-on treatment, based on your symptoms and aims. Depending on your level of private health fund cover, you may be able to claim a rebate, although annual limits and eligibility vary. Contact your provider to confirm what applies.

Physiotherapy isn’t only for when something goes wrong. Regular physiotherapy may help you move more efficiently, manage muscle tightness, and improve posture, supporting a healthier, more active life long term.Physiotherapist-led exercise classes offer supervised movement sessions focused on building strength, improving mobility, supporting balance and maintaining overall movement. Your exercises may be adapted to your current needs and goals, with ongoing guidance during the class.
