How Does Physiotherapy Work?

By looking at how your body moves, your physiotherapist may identify the underlying cause of your concern and tailor a treatment plan to suit your goals and lifestyle.

Treatments may include:

Manual Therapy

Through gentle manipulation of muscles and joints, manual therapy may help reduce pain and work toward improving your mobility.

Exercise Programs

An individualised exercise programme may help support the development of strength and flexibility over time.

Shockwave Therapy

Using high-energy sound waves shockwave therapy may help stimulate tissue and support the recovery process.

Therapeutic Ultrasound

By directing sound waves at the affected area, therapeutic ultrasound may help support the recovery process and assist in reducing inflammation.

Dry Needling

Dry needling uses fine needles applied to targeted muscle points in an effort to release tight muscles and reduce pain.

Clinical Reformer Pilates

Clinical reformer pilates may help you work toward better movement patterns while supporting your recovery over the long term.

Support for Your Pelvic and Women’s Health at Any Age

Whether symptoms began after having a baby or have developed over time, concerns such as back pain, bladder leakage and core weakness deserve attention. Pelvic pain and pain during intercourse can be difficult to manage alone, particularly when they affect daily life and intimacy.

Women’s health is complex and deeply personal, and it’s different for everyone. Our experienced pelvic health physios at DX Physio tailor your women’s health physio care to what you’re going through, with one aim in mind: getting you moving with confidence, strength and comfort.

How Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Can Support Your Health

A pelvic concern is not always what brings someone to our pelvic floor physiotherapists. Ongoing back or hip pain can lead women to seek another perspective, particularly when stretching, massage and general physio have not stopped the discomfort from recurring.

The pelvic region can be an important part of the picture, even when your main concern is back or hip pain. Pregnancy, menopause and surgery may contribute to pelvic muscles becoming weak, tight or unbalanced, which can influence posture, stability and breathing. A pelvic floor assessment may help identify whether these muscles are contributing to your symptoms and guide an individualised care plan.

Our physiotherapists have experience in assessing and managing a broad range of sports and exercise-related injuries. Whether you are a competitive athlete or simply looking to stay active, we’ll collaborate with you to develop a personalised care plan to support your recovery.

Beyond managing existing injuries, physiotherapy may also play a valuable role in helping you understand how your body moves, supporting better posture, and improving movement efficiency. This approach may assist in reducing the likelihood of future injuries.

Physiotherapy isn’t only for when something goes wrong. Regular physiotherapy may help you move more efficiently, manage muscle tightness, and improve posture, supporting a healthier, more active life long term.

Our pelvic health physios see women across Sydney at every stage of life, from first-time mums to women navigating menopause and beyond.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is one part of women’s health physiotherapy. It focuses on assessing and supporting the pelvic floor muscles, which help support the bladder, bowel and pelvic organs. From there we’ll assess how your body is moving and functioning, and build a plan around your specific needs. Nothing happens without your consent, and you’re welcome to ask questions at any point.

Medicare support may apply when your GP creates a chronic condition management plan and refers you for physiotherapy. Eligible patients can access up to five allied health sessions per calendar year, shared between the allied health services listed on the plan. Your GP can confirm whether you qualify. If your private health fund extras policy includes physiotherapy, it may contribute towards each consultation, subject to your level of cover and annual limits. Contact your fund before attending to check what you can claim.

Some of the common conditions treated by our physiotherapists include back and neck pain, sports injuries, joint pain, muscle strains, headaches, pelvic pain, pregnancy-related discomfort, postnatal recovery, bladder concerns, changes in bowel movements, incontinence, prolapse and rehabilitation following surgery or injury. Treatment is tailored to your symptoms, needs and individual goals.

A physiotherapy assessment can consider pelvic floor function, muscle tightness, coordination and the way you move when addressing urinary incontinence, bladder leakage or pelvic pain. Depending on your circumstances, care may include bladder habit education, pelvic floor exercises, breathing strategies and an individual exercise program.

If it is clinically appropriate, your physiotherapist may recommend a physical examination. An internal assessment is only undertaken with your informed consent. Physiotherapy may also support bowel symptoms, pain during intercourse and pelvic organ prolapse, with the approach shaped around your symptoms, goals and comfort.

In most situations, you do not need a referral to book physiotherapy. The appointment may include practical advice, tailored exercise, movement approaches and hands-on treatment, based on your symptoms and aims. Depending on your level of private health fund cover, you may be able to claim a rebate, although annual limits and eligibility vary. Contact your provider to confirm what applies.

The potential benefits of physiotherapy extend beyond injury management. Your exercises may be adapted to your current needs and goals, with ongoing guidance during the class.
