You’re not alone—about 80% of adults experience lower back pain at some point in their lives.
This often disrupts daily activities and affects overall quality of life.
Lower back pain can come from a variety of everyday issues.
Here’s a quick rundown of common causes:
Did you lift something heavy or move the wrong way?
Overstretching a muscle or ligament in your back (a strain or sprain) is the #1 cause of lower back pain.
It can happen during a single awkward lift or from repetitive overuse, leaving your back feeling sore and stiff.
Between the bones of your spine are small cushiony discs.
Sometimes, a disc can bulge or herniate (often called a “slipped disc”) and press on nearby nerves.
This can cause sharp lower back pain that might travel down one leg (sciatica).
It sounds scary, but it’s a common issue and often very treatable.
Slouching at your desk, hunching over your phone, or long hours of sitting can strain the muscles in your lower back.
Over time, weak core muscles and tight back muscles (often due to lack of exercise or desk-job habits) lead to nagging pain.
Even sleeping in a poor position or on an unsupportive mattress can contribute.
As we get older, our joints go through wear and tear – and your spine is no exception.
Conditions like osteoarthritis can cause the cushioning cartilage in the spine to wear down.
This may lead to chronic lower back aches or stiffness, especially in the morning or after staying in one position too long.
It’s essentially the result of years of use (totally normal, but sometimes uncomfortable).
Every person is different.
Stress and Tension can actually make your back muscles tighten up, causing pain (ever feel your shoulders or back get knotted when you’re anxious?).
Pregnancy is another common cause of lower back pain – carrying extra weight and changes in posture put added strain on a mom-to-be’s back.
Even things like old sports injuries, minor spinal curvatures, or simply genetics can play a role.
The truth is, most lower back pain doesn’t come from something dramatic—it comes from how we move, sit, lift, or live day to day.
And while the causes might sound complex, they often boil down to patterns in how your body moves (or doesn’t move).
That’s where physiotherapy comes in. Unlike approaches that only treat the pain, physiotherapy looks at why it’s happening in the first place.
It’s about understanding your movement, posture, habits, and muscle function—then helping you correct the things that keep your pain coming back.
Whether the issue is a tight muscle group, a weak core, or pressure on a nerve from poor spinal alignment, a physiotherapist works with you to retrain how your body supports itself—so you can not only feel better but stay better.
At DX Physio Balgowlah, we approach lower back pain with this same principle: listen first, understand fully, then treat with purpose.
Your first session isn’t rushed.
We take time to hear your story, assess how you move, and identify exactly what’s driving your pain.
Then we tailor a plan that might include hands-on therapy, guided exercise, dry needling, or shockwave therapy—whatever suits your condition, goals, and pace of recovery.
And we don’t just stop at pain relief.
Our focus is to help you rebuild strength, regain confidence in your movement, and get back to living comfortably—without relying on long-term medication or unnecessary interventions.

EXCELLENT Based on 136 reviews Alana Campbell2024-10-13 Amazing knowledge, even when I couldn’t quite describe my issue, it was found and after just 1 week I’ve noticed incredible process. Thank you!! N K2024-10-11 I’ve been Deman’s client on 2 occasions and both times she really helped me. Deman is very knowledgable and attentive, she uses wide range of techniques and adjusts to the clients schedule. I had a trip planned and Deman helped me recover and get back into shape before my flight! Deman was very thorough when diagnosing my condition and prepared detailed plan for my recovery. It was handy to get exercises practised not just on our appointment, but to get detailed video and text materials that helped exercise at home. I feel I have found a physio I can trust. Carla Arroyo2024-10-04 I began physical therapy for hip pain related to my pregnancy, and the first session was incredibly helpful.
